Overview of Career Technologies

In every career today, there is a variety of different technology used daily and without it these jobs would be far more time consuming and far more complicated. There are a couple different technologies that affect accounting today. This technology is constantly changing allowing for more flexibility within every career. Technology most used today includes computers and the data input of the numbers. Information is constantly inserted into computers to allow for more organization and simplicity.

The cash registers in stores also play a part because when they are used, sometimes the information gets directly transferred to a main computer, which keeps track of inventory. Calculators are also used in this traditional career and without them, accounting in previous times would have been much more difficult than it is today.

The most important thing used in my opinion is probably account software. This is because, without it, it would be much harder to keep track of things and would take a lot more time and effort than it does today. There are many different kinds of accounting software and more will likely continue to develop. Examples of the accounting software include the following; Microsoft Dynamics GP, SAP Business One, Sage Accpac, Epicor Enterprise Financials, Netsuite, Quickbooks Enterprise Solutions, and Netsuite. Each of these pieces of technology allow for the traditional career, accounting, to be done as simply as possible, and people are constantly trying to come up with new ideas for technology in order to make things in accounting go more smoothly. 

Detailed Overview of Specific Technology

Out of the three technologies listed above with accounting, I believe that the accounting software is the most important for this particular career. It allows for things to go more smoothly and for the work to be done more efficiently and quicker. Without it, the accounting process would seem far longer and would be much more frustrating to complete without the help of the supporting software. This software does four main things.

It produces the business forms that are needed in accounting, these include invoices, statements, checks, and other purchase order forms, cash register receipts, etc. which are all used daily in accounting. The second thing it does is it calculates whether or not a business is making money. It shows the calculation and makes it far easier to discover whether or not the business is successful or not. It does this by simply keeping track of revenue and expenses. The third thing it does is it shows the financial position of the business, which is usually shown by the balance sheet. That means it lists the firm’s assets, liabilities, and the difference between the two things, which is its equity. The final main thing that accounting software does is it keeps a detailed record of the most important assets for a business or firm such as cash, customer accounts receivable, and inventory of liabilities such as amount owed to vendors, employees, government, lenders, etc. This allows for much easier organization when the software does most of the work for the accountant. 

Assessment of New Technology

With every piece of new technology, there are always advantages and disadvantages that affect the people or the career. This includes accounting, which also has disadvantages and advantages with its new technology. Although the accounting software and new technologies applying to accounting make it more efficient, it also eliminates jobs due to the fact that technology overtakes some jobs. Since accounting is for the most part computerized, people aren’t needed as much for the more traditional accounting jobs and since it is faster, there are less people needed to do it. That is the disadvantage of the more advanced technology, people aren’t needed as much because the technology acts almost as a worker only it does it faster, neater, and overall more efficiently.

The advantage of the technology is relatively obvious. Although it eliminates jobs, it is far more preferred in the industry to do it faster so that they can do more and help more people with their accounting problems, allowing for more business, and essentially more income. It also is less likely to make mistakes than a person, so it also allows for more accuracy and with more accuracy, people will be more likely to return for the services.

So, the advantages overrule the disadvantages and the technology is very important for accounting firms everywhere. This is similar to most technologies in the workplace, the generally have the disadvantage of taking away jobs, but the advantage of making the job go more smoothly and faster, and they usually help the business to run better and improve the overall goal of making money. 

Futuristic Vision of Career & Technology

Since technology has advanced drastically over the last decade, they will likely to continue to advance rapidly over the next decade. I believe that soon accounting will become even simpler and will get much more efficient and less time consuming. These advancements will have more to do with the software than the actual technology in my opinion. I believe that the software will become more advanced so that the accounting process is simply all done electronically and hardly any people will be needed to help with it. It will make this branch of jobs a lot smaller and not many people will be needed. This means that less accounting firms will likely be needed, however the ones that are still around will be making a large amount of money and hardly any labor will be needed, making this job have a decent income.

I also believe that the cash registers connected to computers will be more advanced so that they won’t need to think about it, it will just keep track of the inventory, meaning that the place of business will always know how much they are selling, how the business is doing, etc. This will make businesses run a lot smoother and they will always know how they are doing instead of finding out at the end of every fiscal period. In my opinion, this will help businesses become more successful because they will constantly know what aspects they have to improve. Technology has played a major part in careers and will continue to do so.
